Mindfulness Work life balance Counselling
How to maintain the work-life balance? How to have more ME-time?
It is the reality of the modern life that work will always take the majority of our waking hours and minutes. At the same time we don’t want to put less attention, love or importance into the other areas of your life – family, friends, personal interests…
Seems like a ‘stalemate’ …
Since we can’t change the number of hours in the day, and sometimes we can’t change how many hours we need to spend at work … therefore we need to change the way we attach the value to those hours so that the overall life balance is healthier.
Here is the formula.
Imagine your life is shared between the areas that matter – and each of them has the same value in Happiness Units (HU).
Work, Family, Social, Me are all worth 100 HU
We have on the average 16 hours a day of active time. Work takes about 7 hours (I know it’s more, but with weekends and holidays it may average perhaps?), and there is no room for movement. That leaves 9 hours to be divided between family, social and ME, again for simplicity let’s allocate 3 hours for each area.
So you have 7 hours to achieve the 100HU value but only 3 hours for each of the remaining areas to achieve the same value. Obviously you need to add something else into the mix.
This something is an ingredient that takes away the curse of Time – T and adds the magic of Joy. Let’s call it ‘Presence factor.’- P
Here is your formula:
7T = 100HU and 3T x P =100HU, therefore
3TxP = 7T, so P = 7T/3T = 7/3 = 2.33
P = 2.3
In order to achieve the same Happiness Value as you get at work in 7 hours you have to increase the value of available time by ‘Presence’ factor by 2.3 times!
That’s great news!
It means that you don’t have to stop working or sacrifice ‘ME’ time to increase ‘Family’ time. All you need to do is add quality of presence, and make it count!
Remember the occasions when time drags on and minutes stretch forever and yet leave no impact on life. And the occasions when 10 minutes had the intensity and importance of hours or days… and are still with you…
How to do it?
Practicing mindfulness and ability to stay fully with what you do right now are great ways to begin. Everyone has unique ways of evoking the ‘Presence’ factor and Work Life balance counselling sessions will help you to discover yours.
